Siddharth upsets GM Ziaur Rahman, leads with GM Maxim Turov @ Chennai Open 2010
29th seeded R Siddharth (5/5) took his time to make the news, as he scored his fifth straight win, this time against Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman (2548), in the Chennai Open 2010 International Grandmaster Chess tournament at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Chennai. In a marathon 74 move game, Siddharth cornered the Grandamaster’s king, and facing mate through knight check, Ziaur threw in the towel.
With an Elo rating of 2424 Siddharth has been the highest rated untitled Indian player for some time now. On this occasion, Siddharth has set himself up a nice platform for a possible Norm. Having scalped GM Ziaur Rahman in the fifth round, the talented Chennai based player takes on joint leader and second seed Grandmaster Maxim Turov (2584) of Russia.
Following the leading duo, half a point behind at 4.5 points were 13 players including seven Grandmasters viz., Sundararajan Kidambi, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Marat Dzhumaev, Andrey Gutov, Krayakvin Dmitry, Manik Mikulas and Alexander Zubarev.
