Riverside Students at Chess Gurukul!

24Students of Riverside Public School (http://www.riversidepublicschool.com), Kotagiri, Nilgiri district visited Chess Gurukul at Chennai on a 3-day exposure trip from 17th to 19th July, 2009.

Riverside’s 14-member chess team of young boys and girls by its coach Mr. M Vivek was part of 160 students and 14 staff member contingent, on visit to chennai for exposure to various sports that included Footbal, Hockey, Cricket, Chess, Basketball and Table Tennis. For Chess, the choice was Chess Gurukul.

The boys and girls held out against the former National champion for close to three hours. In the afternoon session, they had an interactive lecture ” The Chess story” on application of chess fundamentals by K Visweswaran.Aarthie giving Simul3133

The second day’s schedule started with FIDE Master K V Shantharam giving two hour lecture on various nuances of chess play, and it was followed by a lecture by renowned Sports Psychologist Krishna Prasad. Then they students also attended Chess Gurukul’s group sessions where they took up challenging tasks set out by the Chess Gurukul trainers. 54

On the third day, came the session that held the children in keen interest, as the group from Kotagiri played with Chess Gurukul students.

Their delight was doubled with the arrival of Chess Gurukul’s National Under-18 Champion Shyaam Nikhil who had come back with the glittering Tamil Nadu State Open Chess Championship trophy which he clinched at Karaikudi only a few days ago. 45

The Riverside Public School is known for its patronage of sports more so for field games like volleyball, basketball, cricket, football and indoor games like table tennis and chess. Under their chess program, all students attend chess sessions atleast once a week. The chess lessons are given to 3 levels of students grouped according to the class in which they are studying. Mr. Vivek who conducts the chess sessions for the various groups, is a avid player too and will be taking part in the forthcoming Srilankan Open chess tournament.

The Riverside Students have to select two sports to engage themselves in. The able support comes from Mr. Govindan, Head of the department, Sports, Mr Alridge, Principal and Dr. Suresh Belliraj, Correspondent who believe Sport too is an part of the young person’s learning and progress.
