Game 2 – Anand beats Topalov, levels scores 1-1
World Champion Viswanathan Anand showed that he made of sterner stuff, as he brought down Veselin Topalov in the second game of the World Chess Championship at Sofia. The scores are now level at 1-1 with ten games to go. The Catalan game began in a sedate manner, with Anand showing off with some risk free chess. Into the middle game, Anand’s early pawn gambit put the Bulgarian behind with a passive position.
Exchanging the queens by the fifteenth move, Anand kept a marginal edge, despite a pair of doubled pawn on the rook file. Trying to wriggle out of the awkward position, Topalov went for the suspectful exchange of knight with 25…Ne3. Anand seized the opportunity and wound up the game in 43 moves. An excellent come back by the world champion, who would be going into the first rest day with a winning mind set.
