Dreev among leaders @ SCS Grandmaster Open, Bhubaneswar
The first double round day saw few upsets, with top seed Grandmaster Alexei Dreev coasting to his third straight win in the 2nd SCS International Grandmaster Chess tournament, at Hotel Swosti Premium, Bhubaneswar. Sharing the lead with Dreev at 3/3 were GMs Neelotpal Das, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Maxim Turov (Chennai Open 2010 winner), Alexandrov, Sergei Kasparov, Kovalyov, Dzhumaev and IMs Situru Nathanel, Vikramaditya Kamble, Rahul Sangma, M R Venkatesh and Ponnuswamy Konguvel.
Former Asian Junior Champion Pandian Karthikeyan went through a painful defeat in the hands of Grandmaster Maxim Turov of Russia. In a drawish rook versus rook and bishop ending, Karthikeyan misplayed the ending and found himself facing the inevitable mate and resigned after 88 moves.
Earlier in the morning round, Akshat Khamparia and Bitan Banerjee held their GM opponents- Alexander Fier (Brazil), Evgeny Vorobiov (Russia) – to creditable draws. Following suit were local star Kiran Manisha Mohanty and World Junior Champion Sowmya Swaminathan, as the duo came up with fighting draws against GMs Thomas Luther (Germany) and Simonian Hrair (Armenia) respectively.
Delhi based Rahul Sangma was the first to derail a Grandmaster in the afternoon round. Rahul handled the middle game efficiently against the Bangladesh GM Enamul Hossain and gained an exchange closer to the fourth hour of play. Converting the advantage with accuracy, Rahul sewed up the game in 64 moves.
