Carlsen triumphs @ Corus Wijk Aan Zee 2010, Anish Giri wins Group B title
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen emerged champion despite facing the music against Italian Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in the final round of the Corus Super Grandmaster Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands. The 56 move draw from the age old Ruy Lopez gave Carlsen, the Norwegian wonder boy, a clear title with 8.5 points from thirteen rounds. The title in the first major tourney of the year at Wijk Aan Zee gives Carlsen his second successive super GM tourney title following his triumph at the London Chess Classic at London during December 2009.
Early leaders Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik settled for the second spot half a point behind at 8.0 points, both losing out on the title chances largely due to their lone defeat in the hands of Indian ace Vishy Anand who finished fourth with a 7.5/13 score. Anand’s solid show kept him the only undefeated player in this prestigious event.
Dutch teenage sensation Anish Giri claimed the Group B title with 9/13 score, while Indian duo Harikrishna and Negi shared the sixth spot with 6.5 points. Anish now graduates to Group A in the year 2011, thanks to his massive triumph in Group B this year.
Chinese Grandmaster Li Chao (10.0) won the title in Group C by a two point margin, where Indians Abhijeet Gupta (7.5) and Sowmya Swaminathan (3.0) took the fourth and thirteenth spot respectively.
