Anand beats Kramnik, Carlsen leads 8/12 @ Corus Wijk Aan Zee 2010

World Champion Viswanathan Anand was in his elements as he outplayed arch rival Vladimir Kramnik in the 12th and penultimate round of the Corus Super Grandmaster Chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands. The win over Kramnik’s Petroff takes Anand to clear fourth spot with 7.0 points, half a point behind Kramnik and Shirov. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen (8.0) following his draw with black pieces against Peter Leko, moves into sole lead with just one round to go.

Even as the end of the tournament is round the corner, Vishy Anand showed great fighting qualities that made him the world champion. Taking up the gauntlet, Anand handled Kramnik’s Petroff with elan, sidestepping a draw by perpetual check at half way mark. A flurry of exchanges later, Kramnik found himself an exchange up, but with the menacing mate on the back rank along with twin passed pawns in the centre. Anand’s huge positional advantage that allowed little compensastion for black, forced the resignation of Kramnik shortly after the first time control.

Crucial final pairings that would decide the title are :

Caruana-Carlsen, Kramnik-Karjakin, van Wely-Anand, Shirov-Dominguez.

Indians had a mixed day in Group B matches, with Harikrishna holding Sutovsky, while Parimarjan Negi went down to Nyback.
