Former World Junior Champion and International Master Dronavalli Harika (2471) capped her illustrious career earning her first Grandmaster Norm in the Reykjavik Open 2010 last week. Scoring 6.0 points from nine rounds Harika came up with a rating performance of Elo 2607, a show that placed her on the elite path of GM Norm.

Harika’s dream show saw her playing with six Grandmasters, winning against two Yuri Shulman (2624) of USA and Tiger Hillarp Persson (2581) of Sweden and holding her own against other four GMs viz., Vladimir Baklan (2654) of Ukraine, Igor Nataf-Alexandre (2534) of France, Hannes Stefansson (2574) of Iceland and Miezes Normunds (2533) of Latvia.

Harika’s lone defeat came in the hands of 13-year-old teenage sensation Ilya Nyzhnyk from Ukraine in the seventh round. But, she recouped immediately scoring over experienced Swedish Grandmaster Tiger Hillarp Persson in the next round and drew with Latvian GM Miezes Normunds in the final round, completing her memorable show in Iceland.

It is high time that I write a blog about piracy as I have had countless discussions with my friends and family regarding this topic and it is definitely worth sharing with the world. The word ‘piracy’ really does not mean much to most people around unless they are directly involved in selling any product that can be pirated!

To begin with I have to say that being a chess grand master I am quite ashamed that most of the chess programs that I used up until last year were pirated. I downloaded them from wherever possible and it seemed pretty harmless to me personally. Comparing my action here to match fixing in any other sport would be rather exaggerating, but however it is an act that thoroughly has been disrespectful to the sport that I have loved and cherished all my life. The sport that has given me everything, including education, a roof and my food deserves a little more I guess. In normal comparison it equates to someone who can afford to buy books, but decided to steal it from a different place say X, irrelevant of the fact if the place X has that book in abundance or not, it is just that act that feels so wrong.

Really? How can something be bad if the whole world does it? When every single song that comes out and every single movie that is released is available in the internet, sometimes even before they hit the theaters! It cannot be wrong to just watch them, can it? So many things that we do in today’s world are what I like to call “mechanical”. Yeah, more like a machine than a man. Lot of our actions are based on pre-existing “norms” and sometimes we do not use our logics to determine what is right or wrong and just flow with the crowd. Think of it this way,
If you were born in an Arab country, restricting women from driving could be normal;
If you were born in India arranged marriage would be totally logical;
If you were born in America, leaving the lights on when leaving a room would not even feel like wasting electricity, because it is available in abundance.

All these practices have evolved over a long period of time for various reasons and even though I know a lot of very reasonable people who believe these activities are normal, the above mentioned points do not seem logical to me. Hence I should not be practicing these ideas even if they were taught to me by my parents or my social surrounding. Hold on! I am not saying I am perfect, I am NO SAINT, I make a lot of mistakes, but I would just like to be aware of all the reasons behind my actions. My point here is to stress that we should not always believe what we are taught to believe by our ancestors or by our social environment, but think on our own and see what would make sense?

Piracy is one huge threat to our community today because it is just common practice. No one who downloads a song from the internet feels like robbing a store, but in reality that is what they are doing. When I walk by a Crocodile showroom and I see a T-Shirts prized for over 200 Euros and I also know that I can get a reasonable one from the store around the corner for 30 bucks, I do not seem to walk into the store with a golf club and smash the glass door into pieces and take them away for free? Over the internet someone has already smashed that glass door open, so we are not bothered to just walk in and pick up some free stuff.

If we are the educated, if we are the literate and if we are the people who have the exposure to the world and we indulge in stealing aka piracy what would those poor uneducated people from rural areas teach their kids? Then again they may not be corrupted by the concrete jungles we live in and they might still have some moral values left in them.

Law enforcement cannot stop crime, it can only control it to a certain extent. Crime can be stopped only when those who want to commit crimes change their mind. Every time you are downloading from the internet you are directly affecting someone’s business. Now the person you are stealing from maybe a millionaire already, but you are no Robin Hood! Watching a movie or listening to a new song is still a luxury in this life, it is not a necessity. So if you do not have the money or if you feel wronged by the prize of the product, just boycott it, get it when you feel it is worth it, but do not download it, please buy it. Be courteous on the web and be patient, good things will always come back to you.

Last but not the least, I am not suggesting that everyone live by the rules all the time. Rules are meant to be broken, that is what makes our lives interesting. Ofcourse if your friend calls up and says there is this new hot pic of a British babe on the net, you may have no other choice to put aside your principles and download it!!! but keep that as a rarity rather than as a practice. Just living by rules will make you a Robot, and your life would become too predictable and boring… Break them once in a while to stay sexy!

Former World Junior Champion Abhijeet Gupta came up with a grand show scoring 7/9, tying for the first place in the Reykjavik Open 2010 at Iceland. In the final round Abhijeet opted for a quick draw against GM Hannes Stefansson in the top board. In addition to Abhijeet  the trio of Grandmasters viz., Ivan Sokolov, Yuriy Kuzubov and Hannes Stefansson finished on the top with 7.0 points.

Capping her fine show Andhra girl Dronavalli Harika finished with 6.0 points sharing the tenth spot. Half a point behind were WGMs Eesha Karavade and Tania Sachdev. IMs Sahaj Grover and Vishal Sareen completed the Indian group with scores of 4.5 & 4.0 respectively.

Norwegian wonder boy Magnus Carlsen (2813) retained his World No.1 spot in the FIDE Rating list for March 2010. Closely behind were Topalov (2805), Kramnik (2790) and Anand (2787) respectively. While Topalov had no rating games to show, the other three had 13 rated games from Wijk aan Zee. The world championship match featuring Vishy Anand and Veselin Topalov will now have an average Elo rating of 2796.

Thanks to his fine performance in World Team Chess Championship at Turkey, Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran moves upto to World No. 46 with an Elo of 2686. Behind him comes Calcutta based GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly who takes the world No. 55 with an Elo of 2672. Pentala Harikrishna who started with Elo 2672 at the beginning of this year, shed 12 Elo points and settles for the 69th place at Elo 2660. In addition to the above four Indians, the Elo 2600 plus group includes Sandipan Chanda (2635), Parimarjan Negi (2634), Koneru Humpy (2622) and Geetha Narayanan Gopal (2604).

Adhiban Baskaran (2510) and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (2504) were the only non-GMs to keep themselves above 2500, while R Siddharth (2458), who made his maiden GM Norm at Chennai Open 2010 recently, continues to be strongest untitled player from India.

With four Indians at the world top 100 and eight of them breaching the 2600 mark, India moved into an all time high rank of World No. 5 in the current list. With 21 Grandmasters, 62 International Masters and 185 titled players, India is now just behind Russia, Ukraine, China and France.

Indian Top 100 FIDE Rating list March 2010

Former World Junior Champion and International Master Dronavalli Harika (2471) held Grandmaster Hannes Stefansson (2574) of Iceland to a draw in the sixth round of the Reykjavik Open 2010. The quiet 17 move draw in the Slav game places Harika in the shared fourth spot, along with fellow Indians Abhijeet Gupta and Eesha Karavade at 4.5 points. Sahaj Grover & Tania Sachdev were half a point behind at 4.0 points, followed by Vishal Sareen at 3.5 points.

Andhra girl Harika has been in top form at Iceland, performing at an ELO rating of 2647 and could be in line for a Grandmaster Norm. So far, Harika drew with GMs Baklan, Nataf and Stefansson, and accounted for GM Yuri Shulman of USA in the third round. In the crucial seventh round, she meets talented 13-year-old Ukraine boy Ilya Nyzhnyk (2495).

In another interesting game, Pune based WGM Eesha Karavade (2405) held experienced Grandmaster Alexei Dreev (2650) of Russia to a draw in 58 moves. The Grunfeld battled extended from a sharp middle game, that converted into a rook and two minor pieces ending. With timely exchanges and series of accurate moves the Russian forced Eesha to split the point. The final position was a technical draw with Eesha’s doubled rook pawns queening in the opposite color, well covered by Dreev.

Six Indians are among the 57 titled players in this strong Open at Iceland. 20 Grandmasters, 2 Women Grandmasters and 17 International Masters complete the line-up of 104 players from 22 countries.

U.Ashwini (Elo 1732) came up with a rating performance of 1961, on way to scoring 6.0 points from nine rounds. The tie-break favored the Chennai based girl, Ashwini and she had podium company with Dharani Sree (Elo 1691), also of Chess Gurukul who took the third spot with 6.0 points. Dharani performed at an Elo of 1572, and would be losing precious Elo’s despite winning the third prize.

In the Boys Under 12 category, Pranav Vijay (Elo 1718) of Chess Gurukul took the second spot, thanks to his steady show at Erode. Pranav came up with a rating performance of Elo 2016, despite missing the first round through exams at school. Warming up with three unrated players, Pranav underwent a real test, playing with strong and higher rated players in the later rounds, finishing a clear second behind the winner, Aravindh Chithambaram.

There was a five way tie for the top spot in the Open category, with CRG Krishna of Andhra Pradesh taking the title w aith 8.0 points.

Final Ranking after 10 Rounds

Second seed Air India led by Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi emerged triumphant in the National Club Team Chess Championship 2010 at DAV Public School, Gurgaon. Needing a draw to clinch the title, Air India completed their final round in style routing 12th seeds Tata Consultancy Services 4-0. Top seed PSPB’s efforts to overtake Air India turned vain, as the second seeded Air India team matched win for win, after they upset the apple cart of the defending champions. The winner takes the trophy and a cash prize of Rs.25000.

Winning all their nine matches Air India finished with a tally of 18 match points, thanks to great team effort of Parimarjan Negi 5.5/7, Tejas Bakre 7/8, Swayangsu Satyapragyan 6.5/9, G B Joshi 5.5/7 and Rahul Shetty 4/5. The crucial win over PSPB sealed the title in Air India’s favor, as both the top seeds were strong by mile with rest of the teams.

Closing in on the heels of the winner was the all Grandmaster team Petroleum Sports Promotion Board who swept past Life Insurance Corporation of India 3.5-0.5, settling for the second spot at 16 match points. The third spot was shared by Railway “A” & “B” teams who both logged in 13 match points.

Final Ranking (after 9 Rounds)

Led by Woman Grandmaster and former Asian Junior Champion Mary Ann Gomes, Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy clinched the title in the  National Club Team Chess Championship for Women at DAV Public School, Gurgaon. The Calcutta based team maintained their cent percent record, winning their fourth match in a row.

The title race for the Men’s event is hotting up, with second seeds Air India and top seed Petroleum Sports Promotion Board going neck to neck after seven rounds.  In the top board game Air India nosed ahead through victories from Parimarjan Negi and Swayangsu Satyapragyan in the first and third boards. Bakre and Joshi drew their games, giving Air India a 3-1 victory over Railways “B”.

Air India lead the table with 14 match points, followed by top seed PSPB at 12 match points. Further down at 10 match points were Railway Sports Promotion Board “A” & “B” teams.

Second seed Air India spearheaded by GMs Parimarjan Negi and Tejas Bakre defeated Railways “A” in the sixth round of the National Club Team Chess Championship 2010 at DAV Public School,  Gurgaon. The win helped Air India to maintain the lead with 12 match points following six straight wins. PSPB and Railways “B” remain close by with 10 match points.

In the upset of the day, Railways “B” defeated higher seeded Life Insurance Corportion of India 3-1, thanks to wins in the second and fourth boards by IMs Vikramaditya Kamble and Suvrajit Saha.
