Final round will be played on Wednesday and World Champion GM Anand will be the chief guest for the prize awarding ceremony.

Three players, 2nd seeded IM Vidit Gujarathi, 3rd seeded IM Lallith Babu and 24th seeded Mehar Chinna Reddy are following the leaders with 6.0 points. A draw in the final round on top board should probably ensure Shyam his maiden Asian Junior title because of his superior tie break though we will have to see how things turn out in the end.

An interesting feature in this years event is that there are 3 above top 10 seeded seeded players in the top two tables in the final round which shows the intense competition prevailing in the tournament.

In the Girls section, WFM Vo Thi Kim Phung (Vietnam) and WFM Nakhbayeva Guliskhan (Kaz) are leading the table with 6.5 and as in boys section 3 players are trailing by half point at 6.0 that includes the top seed Padmini Rout from India.

WFM Swati Mohota of Kolkotta won the Womens fide rating tournament held in Sangli which concluded recently. The Sangli tournament as it is called by most chess players in India, is the only regular fide rated open tournament for Women in India, this being the tenth year. The tournament also sports the highest prize money for women in India, the winner gets a purse of Rs. 21000. The tournament was very exciting with the top two seeds Swati Mahota and Amurutha Mokal involved in a good fight for the title.

Till round Six everything went well for both players while on the seventh round Amrutha was held to a draw by VVS Priya, while Swati Mohota sailed smoothly. On the eighth round however Amurutha caught up with a win while Swati was held to a draw by experienced Arpi Shah of Gujarath.

The last and crucial ninth round was a nail biting finish. Swati went on to win the last round, While Arpi Shah again played an important role by holding Amurutha Mokal to a draw. Thanks to Arpi, Swati Mohota won the tournamnet by a half point margin. This tournamnet has been very lucky for the Mohota sisters.Swathi’s younger sister WGM Nisha Mohota has won this event a couple of times and now the tradition continues with Swati.

Indian icon Viswanathan Anand retained his world championship title, with a black magic victory in the 12th and final game against Veselin Topalov, at Sofia here today. The win gives Anand an unbeatable 6.5 – 5.5 lead against Bulgarian in the 2.000.000 Euros prize money event. Anand won his first world title at Tehran, Iran in 2000, followed it with two more successful title triumphs at Mexico City 2007 and Bonn in 2008.

The Queens Gambit Declined line, had little to offer in the middle game, until Topalo slipped with a colossal mistake – 32. f x e4 – that did him in. That pawn capture, started a flood of attack on the kingside, resulting in loss of queen for a rook and knight. The ensuing ending where Topalov’s pieces lacked harmony, Anand wrapped up the crucial point, in 56 moves.
